PLEASE SUBSTITUTE FOR ORDINANCE NO. <br />58-08 PLACED ON 1ST READING & REFERRED <br />TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE 5/19/08 <br />2ND READING 6/2/08 <br />ORDINANCE NO. 58-08 BY: Antonio, Bul 1 ock, Butler, Dever, <br />Powers, Summers. <br />AN ORDINANCE to amend Chapter 506, Dangerous and Vicious Animals of the <br />Codified Ordinances of the City of Lakewood to prohibit Dangerous Animals from being <br />kept in the City of Lakewood, to create an exception to the prohibition and a period in <br />which existing Dangerous animals may be registered and permitted to remain in the <br />City of Lakewood, and to increase restrictions and penalties for keeping a Dangerous <br />Animals within the City of Lakewood. <br />WHEREAS, non-compliance with the City's existing dangerous dog safety laws is <br />widespread and poses a significant potential threat to public safety; and <br />WHEREAS, improved penalties for non-compliance and strengthened registration <br />and tracking requirements can improve dangerous dog safety compliance; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Lakewood has experienced a rising population of <br />dangerous dogs in recent years, including canines of the breeds commonly known as Pit <br />Bull Dogs and Canary Dogs; and <br />WHEREAS, the City of Lakewood has experienced a rising population of <br />dangerous dogs in recent years, including canines of the breeds commonly known as Pit <br />Bull Dogs and Canary Dogs; and <br />WHEREAS, for the City of Lakewood to preserve its safe, clean, and family- <br />friendly character it needs dog safety policies appropriate to a compact community with <br />small yards, families close together, and thousands of school-aged kids and senior <br />citizens walking the streets; and <br />WHEREAS, the protection of the health and safety of the residents of the City of <br />Lakewood is of primary concern; <br />Now Therefore, <br />BE 1T ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br />Section 1. That Chapter 506, Dangerous and Vicious Animals, of the Codified <br />Ordinances of the City of Lakewood, currently reading as follows: <br />
