RESOLUTION NO. 5447 <br /> <br />BY: Wendlinlg, Brown, Chinnock, Gallagher, <br /> Graham, McBride, Salmon <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION in memory of the late William Oo Douglas, <br />retired Justice of the United States Supreme Court. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, prior to his passing on January 1!9, 1980, <br />William O. Douglas had served the people of the United! States as a <br />Justice of the United States Supreme Court for thirty-,six years and <br />seven months--a longer term than any other justice, anld <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, up to the time of his retirement ~from the Supreme <br />Court on November 12, 1975, Justice Douglas was known as an outspoken <br />champion, watchdog and defender of individual rights a!nd liberty, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, throughout his judicial career, JUstice Douglas <br />was held in highest regard by his peers and recognizedJas an eminent <br />scholar of the law who continually struggled for the r!ights of th~ poor <br />and the downtrodden~ and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, such dedication and service to h ~ country should <br />be recognized and memorialized in a proper and fitt[nglmanner, now, <br />therefore, <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, <br />STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That the Council of the City of Lakewood, Ohio <br />honors the memory of retired Justice William O. Douglas and extends to <br />his family its deepest.sympathy and its appreciation on behalf of the <br />citizens of Lakewood, Ohio, for his years of devoted public service° <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be and she is hereby <br />authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of!this Resolution <br />to Mrs° William O.
