RESOLUTION NO. 5448 <br /> <br />BY: Brown~ Chinnock, Gallagher, Graham, <br /> McBride, Salmon, Wendling <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION in memory of the late George:Meany, labor leader <br />and past President of the AFL-CIO. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, George Meany, recognized as the Chief spokesman of <br />organized labor, passed away on January 10, 1980 after a lifetime of <br />service to the labor force of the United States, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, George Meany began his career en,oute to becoming <br />the center of power of the American labor movement by'serving as Secretary- <br />Treasurer of the American Federation of Labor from 1939 to 1952 after <br />serving five years as President of the New York State,Federation of <br />Labor, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in 1952, George Meany was elected President of the <br />American Federation of Labor and during his tenure in Ioffice was the <br />driving force behind the merger of the American Federaltion of Labor and <br />the Congress of Industrial Organizations into the AFL-,CIO, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, George Meany served as President Iof the nearly <br />14 million member AFL-CIO since its organization in 19155 until November, <br />1979 and forged the organization into a powerful voicel, ever striving for <br />social justice and economic dignity for working people, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, such dedication and accomplishmenlt should be <br />recognized and memorialized in a proper and fitting malnner; now, therefore, <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, <br />STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section I._ That the Council of the City o~ Lakewood, Ohio <br />honors the memory of George Meany and extends its appreciation on behalf <br />of the people of Lakewood, Ohio for his years of dedication and service <br />to the labor movement in the United States° <br /> <br /> Section 2o That the Clerk of Council be and she is hereby <br />authorized and directed to forward a certified copy oflthis ResolutiOn <br />to the headquarters of the ALF-CIO, Washington, D.C. <br /> <br />Adopted ~-, <br /> <br />Approved: <br /> <br />Clerk ' <br /> I <br /> <br /> <br />
