RESOLUTION NO. 5448 BY: Brown~ Chinnock, Gallagher, Graham, McBride, Salmon, Wendling A RESOLUTION in memory of the late George:Meany, labor leader and past President of the AFL-CIO. WHEREAS, George Meany, recognized as the Chief spokesman of organized labor, passed away on January 10, 1980 after a lifetime of service to the labor force of the United States, and WHEREAS, George Meany began his career en,oute to becoming the center of power of the American labor movement by'serving as Secretary- Treasurer of the American Federation of Labor from 1939 to 1952 after serving five years as President of the New York State,Federation of Labor, and WHEREAS, in 1952, George Meany was elected President of the American Federation of Labor and during his tenure in Ioffice was the driving force behind the merger of the American Federaltion of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations into the AFL-,CIO, and WHEREAS, George Meany served as President Iof the nearly 14 million member AFL-CIO since its organization in 19155 until November, 1979 and forged the organization into a powerful voicel, ever striving for social justice and economic dignity for working people, and WHEREAS, such dedication and accomplishmenlt should be recognized and memorialized in a proper and fitting malnner; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: Section I._ That the Council of the City o~ Lakewood, Ohio honors the memory of George Meany and extends its appreciation on behalf of the people of Lakewood, Ohio for his years of dedication and service to the labor movement in the United States° Section 2o That the Clerk of Council be and she is hereby authorized and directed to forward a certified copy oflthis ResolutiOn to the headquarters of the ALF-CIO, Washington, D.C.
