RESOLUTION N0. 5845-84 BY: Brown, Chinnock, Gallagher, Graham, <br /> McBride, Salmon, Wendling <br /> A RESOLUTION protesting the persecution of the Baha'is in Iran and <br /> urging the appropriate elected representatives to the Congress of the United <br /> States to support measures to bring such persecution to an end. <br /> WHEREAS, since Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini came to power in Iran five <br /> <br /> years ago, followers of the Baha'i religion have been subjected to continued <br /> harassment and persecution in that country, and <br /> WHEREAS, this Council believes there are approaches which the govern- <br /> ment of the United States can take to ease such persecution in Iran such as of- <br /> ficial appeals to the Iranian government, the cessation of all trade with Iran <br /> until the persecution is halted, and continued recognition by the Department of <br /> Justice, Immigration and Naturalization Service, that Baha'is in the United <br /> States are refugees from religious persecution, and <br /> WHEREAS, in protest of this appalling violation of religious freedom, <br /> this Council desires to express its deep concern for the welfare of the Baha'is <br /> in Iran and to urge the appropriate representatives to the Congress of the <br /> United States to support any and all measures which will bring such persecution <br /> to an end; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> Section 1. That the Council of the City of Lakewood for and on <br /> behalf of the citizens of Lakewood, Ohio formally protests the harassment and <br /> persecution of the Baha'is in Iran. <br /> Section 2. That the Council of the City of Lakewood for and on <br /> behalf of the citizens of Lakewood, Ohio, strongly urges the representatives to <br /> the Congress of the United States to support all measures which, if im- <br /> plemented, would bring to an end the harassment and persecution of the Baha'is <br /> in Iran. <br /> Section 3. That the Clerk of Council be and she is hereby authorized <br /> and directed to forward certified copies of this Resolution to United States <br /> Senators John H. Glenn and Howard M. Metzenbaum, and United States Representa- <br /> tives Edward F. Feighan, Mary Rose Oakar, Louis Stokes, and Dennis E.
