RESOLUTION No. 6138-87 BY: Brown, Chinnock, Gallagher, Graham, <br /> McBride, Salmon, Wendling <br /> A RESOLUTION expressing to the Food and Drug Administration <br /> and the Department of Energy, the concerns of the Council of the <br /> City of Lakewood, Ohio, regarding the irradiation of foods and <br /> a request that our elected state and federal representatives <br /> strongly support legislation that greater research on the effects <br /> of irradiation be entered upon prior to authorizing further <br /> irradiation of food products. <br /> WHEREAS, a form of food preservation is being promoted by <br /> the Department of Energy and the Food and Drug Administration <br /> which involves the use of ionizing radiation to kill parasites <br /> and bacteria, and <br /> WHEREAS, research on the metabolic changes in such treated <br /> foods has not been conclusive, and <br /> WHEREAS, the requirements for labeling food products so <br /> treated is not uniform, and <br /> WHEREAS, this Council wishes to make known to the Department <br /> of Energy and to the Food and Drug Administration and to its <br /> elected representatives its concern over the requirements for <br /> research and testing before all foods are allowed to be <br /> irradiated and to include requirements that clear markings be <br /> required on all food products which have been so treated; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE <br /> OF OHIO: <br /> Section 1. That this Council for and on behalf of the <br /> residents of the City of Lakewood, Ohio, hereby expresses to the <br /> members of the Department of Energy and the Food and Drug <br /> Administration and to area congressional representatives, our <br /> governor and state representatives, its concern over the <br /> irradiation process and strongly urges all parties concerned to <br /> examine the possible consequences which could result and to <br /> conscientiously do all things necessary to protect the interest <br /> of all citizens of the City of Lakewood and the State of Ohio. <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be and she is hereby <br /> authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of this <br /> resolution to Congresswoman Mary Rose Oakar, Congressmen Edward <br /> F.
