RESOLUTION NO. 6405-89 BY: Chinnock, Gallagher, <br /> Gazzana, George, Graham, Wendling <br /> AN EMERGENCY RESOLUTION authorizing the Mayor to send <br />disaster relief assistance to the City of Charleston, South Carolina. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Charleston, South Carolina and the <br />surrounding area has suffered tremendous damage including loss of <br />property, services, housing and personal injury as a consequence of <br />the devestating effects of Hurricane Hugo, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, our City is well aware of the effects of such <br />tragedies and cognizant of the help we received from other communities <br />and we pledge to give other communities in joint disaster relief <br />agreements, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Mayor and this Council and the people of our <br />City have deep sympathy for the plight of the people and officials of <br />the City of Charleston, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Mayor and the people of the City of Charleston <br />have requested assistance from sister communities throughout the <br />nation, and <br /> <br />join <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is in the interest of all our citizens that we <br />together to assist other communities in times of such disasters, <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this constitutes an emergency resolution providing <br />for the usual daily operation of a municipal department and the <br />health, safety and welfare of our community; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br />Section 1. That Council and the Mayor express their deep <br />concern for all the people of the City of Charleston and the <br />surrounding area and urge our citizens to send whatever relief they <br />are able to provide, both by sending non-perishable food items to the <br />Lakewood Christian Service Center for transportation to the Charleston <br />area, and gifts of money or checks made payable to the Charleston <br />Disaster Relief Fund, c/o City Hall, 800 Broad Street, Charleston, <br />South Carolina 29401. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That they Mayor is hereby authorized to send up <br />to four City workers with two vehicles to the City of Charleston along <br />with appropriate hand tools as may be determined by the Director of <br />Public Works for the purpose of assisting in the emergency clean up <br />and removal of debris from the Charleston, South Carolina area. <br /> <br /> Section 3. It is found and determined that all formal <br />actions of this Council concerning and relating to the passage of this <br />resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council, and that <br />all such deliberations of this Council and of any of its committees <br />that resulted in such formal action were in meetings open to the <br />public in compliance with all legal requirements. <br /> <br /> Section 4. That this resolution is hereby declared to be an <br />emergency measure for the reasons stated in the preamble hereof and <br />provided it receives the affirmative vote of two-thirds of all members <br />elected to Council, it shall take effect and be in force immediately <br />upon its adoption and approval by the Mayor; otherwise, it shall take <br />effect and be in force after the earliest period allowed by law. <br /> <br /> PRESIDENT <br /> <br />Approved:~~/ /~ <br /> <br />CLERK <br /> <br /> <br />
