RESOLUTION NO. <br /> <br />6417-89 <br /> <br />BY: Brown,~Cbinnock, <br /> Gazzana, George, Graham, <br />Wendling <br /> <br /> AN EMERGENCY RESOLUTION to declare December 3-9, <br />"Lakewood Fights Back Against Drugs Week." <br /> <br />1989, as <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the presence of drugs and narcotics in our society <br />has resulted in innumerable problems of human, community, social and <br />economic dimensions, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the consequences of drug-related <br />witnessed in the loss of human lives, the loss <br />productivity, the diversion of public resources to <br />problems on all fronts to the health of our people, and <br /> <br /> problems are <br /> of economic <br />address these <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the demand for illegal drugs is a pervasive problem <br />that affects all segments of our society, including professional and <br />affluent people, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, illegal drugs plague urban, <br />communities of all sizes and regions, and <br /> <br />suburban, and rural <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, illegal drugs constitute a problem in our community <br />and leads to a host of problems such as homicides, robberies, <br />burglaries and other crimes, and domestic violence, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, a national war on drugs-has been declared to combat <br />the importation, trafficking, sale and abuse of drugs, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, our nation's cities and towns <br />front lines of our war on drugs, and <br /> <br />are on the <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, hundreds of America's dedicated public servants <br />have died and thousands of others risk their lives daily to fight our <br />cities' individual battles against illegal drugs and the criminal <br />activities stemming from illegal drugs; now, therefore, <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this ordinance constitutes an emergency measure <br />providing for the immediate preservation of the public health, safety <br />and welfare, and for the usual daily operation of the municipal <br />department; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That December 3-9, 1989, is hereby declared as <br />"Lakewood Fights Back Against Drugs Week." <br /> <br /> Section 2. That during this week the City of Lakewood will: <br />sponsor a special Kick-Off Dance for middle school age students at the <br />Lakewood Armory; sponsor a Resource Fair/Workshop known as "Chemical <br />Abuse is a Family Affair" put on with the assistance of the <br />professional counselling staff of the Youth Office at Lakewood City <br />Hall; sponsor a Refusal Skill Training Program at Emerson Middle <br />School developed by the Youth Office in cooepration with Jeannie Hopps <br />and the Lakewood Board of Education; and a series of Panel Discussions <br />titled "Drugs Are An Intergenerational Problem" sponsored by the <br />Office on Aging to be held at the various Senior Centers in Lakewood. <br /> <br /> Section 3. That the establishment of a Citizens Advisory <br />Committee will be encouraged for the Prevention/Education /Treatment <br />of Chemical Abuse known as "The PET Project." <br /> <br /> Section 4. That the Mayor and the Council of the City of <br />Lakewood urge community groups, business and civic organizations, all <br />school organizations and all of its citizens to support and <br />participate in special activities during that week to draw community <br />attention to this issue. <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br /> <br />
