RESOLUTION NO. 643 1-89 <br /> <br />BY: Brown, Chinnock, Gallagher, <br /> Gazzana, George, Graham <br /> <br /> A Resolution to congratulate St. Joseph High School on winning the <br />Division II State High School Football Championship in Columbus this past <br />Saturday, November 25. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, special recognition and commendation is due the entire St. <br />Joseph Varsity Football Team, as well as to their coach, Bill Gutbrod, for <br />bringing the Division I! State Championship back to the Cleveland area--and <br />for their heroic performance at the lSth Annual State High School Football <br />Championship game, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Lakewood, through its Mayor and Council, <br />congratulates the St. Joseph football team and extends its appreciation <br />for the fine recognition they have brought the Greater Cleveland area through <br />their good sportsmanship and outstanding performance in Columbus, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this Council realizes and appreciates the dedication and <br />commitment which players, coaches and staff have demonstrated in order to <br />accomplish this enviable feat, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, St. Joseph's has achieved a level of success in Ohio <br />football that is unequalled in the '80's, having reached the playoffs seven <br />times during ten years, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, St. Joseph's was clearly an "underdog" going into the <br />game, being matched against a team that held the Associated Press No. 1 <br />Ranking in the state, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, St. Joseph trailed by a touchdown, going into the second <br />half--yet overcame that deficit, winning 21 to 14, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, St. Joseph's has been in existence for 40 years and has <br />known only one coach--Bill Gutbrod--in its entire football history, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Bill Gutbrod is retiring this year, concluding his career <br />with the most coveted prize in Ohio high school football, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, St. Joseph High School prides itself on academics as well <br />as athletics, producing young men who can meet life's challenges on any <br />level, while preparing them to be our leaders of tomorrow, now therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That the City of Lakewood, through its Mayor and <br />Council extends its congratulations to the St. Joseph Vikings for being the <br />Champions of Division II Football in all of Ohio for 1989. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be, and she is hereby <br />authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of this Resolution to the <br />St. Joseph Viking Football Team, c/o Bill Gutbrod, 18491 Lakeshore Blvd., <br />Cleveland, Ohio 44119 and that a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the <br />minutes of this meeting. <br /> <br />Approved :y~t~~ ~///~o(>~ <br /> <br /> <br />
