RESOLUTION NO. 6433-89 BY: Brown, Chinno:k, Gallagher, <br /> G~zzana, George, Grahmm, Wendling <br />A RESOLUTION by the Mayor of Lakewood through the Council of the <br />City of Lakewood expressing admiration and gratitude to Citizen Lucy Lan~ <br />Sekerka for her Herculean efforts to make Lakewood's long-needed War Veterans <br />Memorial a reality. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Lucy Lang Sekerka spent years researching thousands of <br />names, including speaking directly to family members of the deceased war <br />veterans, reading obituaries, contacting veterans' groups and state and <br />federal agencies; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Lucy Lang Sekerka went so far as to copy names off grave <br />markers at Arlington National Cemetery in her attempt to leave no deserving <br />name off of the monument; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Lucy Lang Sekerka's research culminated in a manuscript <br />from which were taken the names which are now etched into the black marble of <br />the War Veterans Memorial located in Lakewood Park; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, without the unceasing efforts of this volunteer, Lakewood <br />would not have a war memorial of such magnitude, and in fact, might still be <br />only in the planning stages; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, four hundred or more family members of the men whose names <br />are engraved on the monument saw fit to brave the "elements" in one of the <br />heaviest snowstorms ever for that time of year, demonstrating dramatically <br />what importance the memorial holds for them; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the long lists of names of Lakewood's War dead compiled by <br />Lucy Lang Sekerka and included on the monument will serve, by their sheer <br />numbers, to drive home the horrors of war to the youth of Lakewood who often, <br />influenced by television, come to romanticize war, and these same children <br />are the leaders of tomorrow; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That the citizens of Lakewood, through its Mayor and <br />Council, extend their deepest and most heartfelt thanks to Lakewood citizen <br />Lucy Lang Sekerka for her noble labors. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be, and she is hereby <br />authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of this Resolution to <br />Lucy Lang Sekerka, 1200 Andrews Avenue, Lakewood, Ohio 44107 and that a copy <br />of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of this meeting. <br /> <br />Adopted: <br /> <br />Approved: <br /> <br />CLERK <br /> <br /> <br />
