RESOLUTION NO. <br /> <br />6474-90 <br /> <br /> BY: Boscia, Gallagher, <br />Gazzana, George, Graham, Roth, Smith <br /> <br /> AN EMERGENCY RESOLUTION designating and proclaiming April <br />22, 1990, as Earth Day in the City of Lakewood. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, almost twenty years ago, more than twenty million <br />Americans joined together on Earth Day in a demonstration of concern <br />for the environment, and their collective action resulted in the <br />passage of sweeping new laws to protet our air, water and land, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in the nineteen years since the first Earth Day, <br />despite environmental improvements, the environmental health of the <br />planet is increasingly endangered, threatened by Global Climate <br />Change, Ozone Depletion, TroPiCal Deforestation, Ocean Pollution, <br />Hazardous Waste, Nuclear Waste, Toxic Pesticides, and Desertification <br />requiring action by all sectors of society, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 is a national and international call <br />to action for all citizens to join in a global effort to save the <br />planet, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and events will educate <br />all citizens on the importance of acting in an environmentally <br />sensitive fashion by recycling; conserving energy and water; promoting <br />alternative renewable energy sources; encouraging sustainable, organic <br />agricultural methods; using efficient transportation; adopting more <br />ecologically sound lifestyles, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 actities and events will educate all <br />citizens on the importance of buying and using only those products <br />least harmful to the environment, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and events will educate <br />all citizens on the importance of doing business only with those <br />companies that are environmentally sensitive and responsible, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and events will educate <br />all citizens on the importance of supporting the passage of <br />legislation that will help protect the environment, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this resolution constitutes an emergency measure <br />providing for the health, safety and welfare of all citizens of our <br />community; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That this Council and the Mayor support the <br />goals of Earth Day and designate and proclaim April 22, 1990, as Earth <br />Day in the City of Lakewood. That day shall be set aside for public <br />activities promoting preservation of the local and global environment <br />and launching the "Decade of the Environment." <br /> <br /> Section 2. That this Council and the Mayor urge all of our <br />citizens to join with them in the observance of April 22, 1990, as <br />Earth Day. <br /> <br /> Section 3. It is found and determined that all formal <br />actions of this Council concerning and relating to the passage of this <br />resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council, and that <br />all such deliberations of this Council and of any of its committees <br />that resulted in such formal action were in meetings open to the <br />public in compliance with all legal requirements. <br /> <br /> <br />
