RESOLUTION NO. <br /> <br />6518-90 <br /> <br /> BY: Boscia, Gazzana <br />George, Graham, Smith <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION declaring the week of October 20-28, 1990, <br />Lakewood's Red Ribbon Week Campaign, to create an awareness that <br />everyone has a choice to live a drug-free lifestyle. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the scourge of illegal drug trafficking and <br />abuse continues to be painfully visible throughout the nation, <br />and is acknowledged to be the most serious problem that the <br />nation's cities have had to face over the past several years; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is imperative that visible, unified <br />prevention education efforts by community members be launched to <br />reduce the demand for drugs, particularly in Lakewood's youth, <br />the rock upon which Lakewood's future rests; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the cost of fighting the war on drugs in our <br />schools and hospitals and on our streets has grown steadily over <br />the years, far outstripping the ability of local governments to <br />maintain the anti-drug efforts that are needed; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this Administration recognizes that the <br />support of the people in the community is the most effective <br />weapon they can employ in their efforts to reduce the demand for <br />illegal drugs and drive away the suppliers of those drugs; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the National Federation of Parents For Drug <br />Free Youth and the State of Ohio are sponsoring the National Red <br />Ribbon Campaign offering citizens the opportunity to demonstrate <br />their commitment to drug free lifestyles; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, October 20-28, 1990 has been designated <br />National Red Ribbon. Week, with President Bush and Mrs. Bush, as <br />honorary chairs of the Campaign, calling on all Americans to show <br />their support for a drug free nation by wearing a red ribbon <br />during that week; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, groups representing business, government, law <br />enforcement, schools, religious institutions, service <br />organizations, youth, physicians, senior citizens, military, <br />sports teams, and individuals will demonstrate their commitment <br />to drug-free, healthy lifestyles by wearing and displaying red <br />ribbons during this week-long campaign; and <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That this Council and the Mayor hereby <br />declare October 20-28, 1990, as Lakewood Red Ribbon Week and <br />encourage the participation of all our citizens. <br /> <br />all <br />Free." <br /> <br /> Section 2.
