KESOLUTIONNO. 7298-98 BY: Corrigan, Flannery, George, <br /> Roth, Seelie, Skindell, Smith <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION to establish, Tuesday, March 3, I998, as Peace Corps Day in <br />the City of Lakewood. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Peace Corps has become an enduring symbol of our nation's <br />commitment to encourage progress, create opportunity and expand development at the grass <br />roots level in the developing world, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, more than 150,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps <br />Volunteers in more than 130 countries since 1961, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, over the last thirty-six years thousands of men and women from the <br />State of Ohio have responded to our nation's call to serve by joining the Peace Corps, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Peace Corps volunteers have made si~tmifieant and lasting <br />contributions around the world in agriculture, business, development, education, the environment, <br />he~th, and youth development, and have hnproved the lives of inc~duals and communities <br />around the world, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Peace Corps volunteers have strengthened the ties of fiSendsb~p and <br />undemanding between the people of the United States and those of other countries, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Peace Corps volunteers, enriched by their experience overseas, have <br />brought their communities throughout the United States a deeper understanding of other cultures <br />and traditions, thereby brin~n~ a domestic dividend to our nation, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, many volunteers returned to lead productive lives as good c/fizens in <br />Lakewood, and <br /> <br /> WltEREAS, it is indeed fitting to recognize the achievements of the Peace Corps <br />and honor its volunteers, past and present, and reaffirm our nation's commitm~t to helping <br />people help themselves throughout the world; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> SECTION 1. That this Council and Mayor, hereby designate March 3, 1998, as <br />Peace Corps Day in the City of Lakewood. <br /> <br /> SECTION 2.
