RESOLUTION NO. 7 3 0 8- 9 8 <br /> <br />BY: Corrigan, Flannery, George, <br /> Roth, Seelie, Smith, Skindell <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION to honor the Lakewood St. Edward High School 1997-98 basketball <br />Team as the winner of the Division I state title. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Lakewood St. Edward Eagles gave poetic expression to the game of <br />basked)all, and anyone fortunate enough to have watched them play profited from the experience, <br />for you knew that you wimessed one of the truly great teams in the history, of Ohio high school <br />athletics, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Eagles posted a 26-1 record--the best season record in the history of the <br />St. Edvard Basketball Program--and remained undefeated against all Ohio teams at 20-0; and, as <br />the top-ranked team in both the Associated Press Division I state poll and The Plain Dealer's <br />seven-county poll, ranked among the top five teams in the country in every national poll, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Coach Eric Flannery adopted the motto "Unfinished Business" to spur the <br />team past disappointing losses in the state semifinals the last two seasons, closed the deal this <br />year by defeating rival St. Ignatius High School 70-61 in the state championship game in front of <br />12, 049 fans in St. John Arena, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the 1997-98 team academically posted a median 3.1 GPA (grade\point <br />avera~)~proving that student-athletes can score both on the court and in the classroom, andt <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this team was greater than the sum of its individual talents, which were <br />numerics, and exhibited by Cerick Austin, Brian Ansberry, Chris Baffle, Nick Baffle, Sam <br />Clancy {All-State honors), Gabe De Jesus, Pete Latkovic, Steve Lepore (All-State honors), Steve <br />Logan(Alt-State honors), J'Quan Myles, Mike Newman, Tim Smith, Keith Wane, and Jawad <br />Williams, and coached by Eric Flannery (The Plain Dealer's Coach-of-the-Year), Troy Radinsky, <br />Anthony Reed, and Pete Campbell, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, St. Edward High School proudly hails from the city of Lakewood, and i~s <br />identified in forums both academic and athletic, be it national or statewide, as Lakewood St~ <br />Edwant High School, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Lakewood St. Edward High School has brought distinction and honor to this <br />community for its achievements in athletics, for an outstanding academic reputation with national <br />recogmtion by the U.S. Department of Education as a "School of Excellence," and for remaining <br />true to the precepts of the Catholic faith as instructed by the Congregation of Holy Cross <br />(C.S.C.); now, therefore, <br /> <br /> BE IT KESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section t. On behalf of the residents of Lakewood, the Mayor and this Council <br />extend to the Lakewood St. Edward High School Eagles Basketball Team congratulations for its <br />outsm_~li~g achievements during the 1997-98 high school basketball season. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be, and she is hereby authorized and directed <br />to forvraml a certified copy of this Resolution to the Lakewood St. Edward High School Eagles <br />Basketball Team, c/o Coach Eric Flannery, St. Edward High School, and a copy of this resolution <br />be spread upon the minutes of this meeting. <br /> <br />PRESIDENT <br /> <br /> <br />
