RESOLUTION NO. 7426-99 BY: Corrigan, FitzGerald, <br /> George, Roth, Seelie <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION commending the Barton Center for providing valuable services and <br />programs to the senior citizens of Lakewood for thirty-five (35) years. <br /> <br /> WttEREAS, the Barton Center was established as a senior activity center in conjunction <br />with th~ Westerly Apartment complex. The Barton Center officially opened in March, 1964, and <br />September 1S, 1964, was designated as "Registration Day". The Barton Center was named after <br />DeArv G. Barton, who, in the 1960s, recognized the great unmet need for reasonably priced, <br />decent housing for senior citizens; <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Barton Center, located on the first floor of the Westerly Apartment <br />Building, has been a model for many other senior centers in Ohio and across the United States. <br />Sponsored by the Lakewood by the Lakewood Saycess, the Barton Center is a non-profit, self- <br />supporting organization that serves people over the age of 55; <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Barton Center has nearly 1,000 members and offers one of the most <br />extensive activity programs in the country. The senior center sponsors day and overnight trips <br />and tours, community forums, a strawberry festival and a holiday fair; <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Barton Center is an asset to the Lakewood community and the senior <br />citizens it serves; now, therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That this Council and Mayor, on behalf of the Citizens of the City of <br />Lakewood, extend to the Barton Center their commendation for providing valuable services and <br />programs to the senior citizens of Lakewood for thirty-five (35) years. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be and she is hereby authorized and directed to <br />forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Barton Center and that a copy of this resolution <br />be spread upon the minutes of this meeting. <br /> <br /> President <br /> Cer U <br /> ~',-/ "' l~yor ' ' <br /> <br /> <br />
