Nye County, <br />Ncvcd~ <br /> <br /> WI-I~, these proposals authorize and direct thc transportation of' high-level nuclear waste on an <br />unprcccdent~l end messive scale and would likely result in the shipment of dangerous ra~ioectivc waste by why <br />of trucks on 1-90 and by wey o~rail on the Nickel PI~ reilw~ line through thc City o£ Lakcwood; <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, thc City of Lakcwood, with a population of $9,7111 according to the 1990 U.S. Census in a <br />5.6 square 'mile area, is the most densely populated community between New York City and Chicago, and <br />maintains respcotable property values and is a city where its residents enjoy a high quality of life; <br /> <br /> WHYS, thel~ ~r~ ninny un_answered questions regarding the safety of transporting and storing <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, thc City of Lakewood, like most communities, is without sufficient trained emergency <br />personnel, equipment, and financial resources to completely safeguard its residents in the event of a nuclear <br />transport accident, and the shipment of nuclcar wast: materials through thc City of Lakewood would therefore <br />bca major risk to thc community; <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That this Council opposes thc transportation, either by highway or railway, of high-level <br />nuclear wnstc (irradiated nuclear fuel) through the City of Lakcwood: <br /> <br /> Section 2. That this Council encourages thc United St~cs Cong~ss to consider all ramifications of <br />nuclear waste transportation ami storage before any trar~on efforts begin and preempt all plans to <br />transpo~ high-level radioa~ivc waste until the Department of Energy has identified and cons~ruct~.A a viable <br />long-term disposal facility and bas physically ~-stcd znd proven safc the methods of~anspori~ion; <br /> <br /> Section 3.
