Kraut, 2000, Choosing the High Road: Businesses That Pay a Living IVage and Prosper, <br />(Boston~ MA: United for a Fair Economy)]; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the more than one point three million Ohioans who lack health <br />insurance, most of them working people and their families who are either not offered <br />employment based health insurance or cannot afford the co-pays and deductibles face <br />negative consequences to their health, their families well being, productivity, and to the <br />stability oftbe work force; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Living Wage Movement of Jobs With Justice is a coalition of <br />labor unions, religious organizations and community groups committed to increasing the <br />economic self-strfficien~y of workers to enhance business productivity, open new <br />markets, reduce poverty, strengthen communities and shrink the demand for governmem <br />assistance to low-income families thereby helping to fulfill the promise of the American <br />Dream that hard work will be rewarded, now, therefore: <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section I. That this CoUnCil, for itself and on behalf of all the citizens of this <br />community, encourages the Board of Commissioners of Cuyahoga County, Ohio to adopt <br />a .living wage resolution based on the reasonable proposition that no one working full <br />time should live in poverty, thereby requiring the Board of Commlnsioners to establish <br />and ensure payment of a living wage and health care benefits for the following: <br /> <br />a~ any worker employed by the Cuyahoga County Board of Commissioners; <br />b. any worker of an employer receiving financial assistance or subsidy from <br /> Cuyahoga County; <br />c. any worker employed by employers contracting with Cuyahoga County for <br /> the provision of goods and services. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That a living wage provides the basic salary necessary to cover a <br />family's food, clothing, shelter, day care, transportation and medical needs. <br /> <br /> Section 3. That failure of said employer to comply with the living wage <br />resolution may result in termination of the contract and/or debarment fi~m future <br />contracts or financial assistance. <br /> <br /> Section 4. That adoption of said living wage resolution encourages all other <br />county elected officials and boards and commissioners to make the same pledge. <br /> <br /> Section 5. That the Clerk of Council be and is hereby authorized and directed <br />to forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Board of Commissioners of Cuyahoga <br />County, 1219 Ontario Street, Cleveland, OH 44113, and that a copy ofthis resolution be <br /> <br />spread upon the minutes of this meeting. <br /> <br />Approved: (~ <~...... <br /> <br />President <br /> <br /> <br />
