R~SOLUTIOI'q NO. 7 7 41-0 3 BY: Corrigan, Dever, Dunn, FitzGerald George, Roth, Seelie. A RESOLUTION to restore the funding and preserve the mandate for Adult Protective Services. WHEREAS, the Ohio Adult Protective Service Law was passed and implemented in 1981 (Ohio Revised Code 5101.60 - 5101.71). This law mandates investigations of adults age 60 years of age and older who are reported to be abused, neglected and/or exploited; and WHEREAS, in Cuyahoga County, the Department of Senior and Adult Services is entrusted with this important mandate and has designated Lakewood's Department of Aging to provide Protective Services to Lakewood Seniors; and WHEREAS, according to the 2000 Census, there are 272,278 adults age 60 years of age and older residing in Cuyahoga County (19.6% of the total population). National estimates indicate that only one in fourteen, cases of abuse, neglect, self-neglect and/or exploitation are reported, and in Cuyahoga County last year, an estimated 24,868 cases went unreported; and WHEREAS, in the year 2002, the County's Department of Senior and Adult Services received 5,260 Information and Assistance calls on the APS hotline; and · WHEREAS, the Governor's PrOposed biennium budget seeks to eliminate the state mandate and all funding for Adult Protective Services, malting Ohio the only state in the country to deny it's citizens this protection; and WHEREAS, the City of Lakewoqd requests, that the State of Ohio restores all funding to the Adult Protective Services budgetary line item t6r the biennium 2004-2005, and restore the separate tine item: and WHEREAS, the mandate to report and investigate Adult Protective Services cases should be preserved; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: Section 1. That the City of Lakewood urges Governor Taft to restore the funding and preserve the mandate for Adult Protective Services for the well safety and well-being of our senior community. Section 2. Section 3.
