R~SOLUTIOI'q NO. 7 7 41-0 3 <br /> <br />BY: Corrigan, Dever, Dunn, FitzGerald <br /> George, Roth, Seelie. <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION to restore the funding and preserve the mandate for Adult Protective <br />Services. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Ohio Adult Protective Service Law was passed and implemented in <br />1981 (Ohio Revised Code 5101.60 - 5101.71). This law mandates investigations of adults age <br />60 years of age and older who are reported to be abused, neglected and/or exploited; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in Cuyahoga County, the Department of Senior and Adult Services is <br />entrusted with this important mandate and has designated Lakewood's Department of Aging to <br />provide Protective Services to Lakewood Seniors; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, according to the 2000 Census, there are 272,278 adults age 60 years of age <br />and older residing in Cuyahoga County (19.6% of the total population). National estimates <br />indicate that only one in fourteen, cases of abuse, neglect, self-neglect and/or exploitation are <br />reported, and in Cuyahoga County last year, an estimated 24,868 cases went unreported; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in the year 2002, the County's Department of Senior and Adult Services <br />received 5,260 Information and Assistance calls on the APS hotline; and <br /> <br /> · WHEREAS, the Governor's PrOposed biennium budget seeks to eliminate the state <br />mandate and all funding for Adult Protective Services, malting Ohio the only state in the country <br />to deny it's citizens this protection; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Lakewoqd requests, that the State of Ohio restores all funding to <br />the Adult Protective Services budgetary line item t6r the biennium 2004-2005, and restore the <br />separate tine item: and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the mandate to report and investigate Adult Protective Services cases <br />should be preserved; now therefore, <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That the City of Lakewood urges Governor Taft to restore the funding and <br />preserve the mandate for Adult Protective Services for the well safety and well-being of our <br />senior community. <br /> <br /> Section 2. Tl~a. t the Clerk of Council be and she is hereby authorized to spread a copy <br />of this resolution upon the minutes of this meeting and forward copies to Governor Robert Taft, <br />State Representatives Michael Skindell, State Senator Dan Brady, Cuyahoga County <br />Commismoners Jimmy Dimora, Timothy McCormack and Peter Lawson Jones. <br /> <br /> Section 3.
