<br /> A RESOLUTION to dedicate November llth as a legal holiday for all non-
<br /> essential employees of the city of Lakewood in commemoration of Veterans Da, a da
<br /> to honOr all veterans of the U.~S. araled forces and those killed in battle, ackno~edgin~
<br /> that our society is strengthened through recognition of the shared sacrifice of its citizens,
<br />· many of whom made the uitimate sacrifice of dedicated public service and died for our
<br /> country.
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, ha 1921, an American Soldier his name "known but to God" was
<br /> buried on a Virginia hillside overlooking the Potomac Privet and the city of Washington,
<br /> D.C. The Arlington Na.tlo~a[ Cemetery burial site of this unknown World War I soldier
<br /> became the personification of dignity and reverence for America's veterans; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, November i iti' gave universal recognition to the celebrated ending
<br /> of World War I hostilities at i la. re., November 11, 1918 (the 11m hour oftbe 11th day of
<br /> the 1 lmonth). The day became known as "Armistice Day"; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, Armistice Day' 'officially received its name in America in 1926
<br />through a COngressional resolution. It became a national holiday 12 years later by similar
<br />Congressional action. But shm~iy after the holiday was proclaimed, World War II broke
<br />out in Europe, which called sixteen and one~half million Americans to duty in service of
<br />their country. Fora- hm~dred and six thousand Americans died; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, in ax~ e~i!brt to recognize the sacrifices World War II Veterans,
<br />Representative Edwin K. Rees of Kansas proposed to change Armistice Day to Veterans
<br />Day, making this an occasion to honor those who have served America in all wars.
<br />President Eisenhower, itt i 954, signed the bill proclaiming November 11 th as Veterans
<br />Day, and he called for Americans everywhere to rededicate themselves to the cause of
<br />peace; and
<br />
