<br />RESOLUTION NO: <br /> <br />7968-05 <br /> <br />Bìr: Corrigan, Dever, Dunn, FitzGerald, <br />Madigan, Seelie. <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION opposing President Bush's proposed job cuts at NASA that would negatively <br />impact the Glenn Research Center as well as cities throughout northeast Ohio <br /> <br />WHEREAS, President Bush's proposed budget would strip almost o\le-fifth of NASA Glenn's <br />income, from $637 million to $519 million, eliminate over 700 civil service jobs and more than 440 <br />contractors; and , <br /> <br />WHEREAS, many outstanding, highly educated and extremely talented scientist and engineers would <br />lose their jobs and be forced to relocate from our region; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, our academic institutes would be stripped of education opportunities, grant funding and <br />outlets for their graduating students; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the economic impact on the cities of Lakewood, Brook Park, Fairview Park and <br />Cleveland, as well as cities throughout northeast Ohio, would negatively affect our residents' quality of life; <br />and, <br />WHEREAS, an estimated 40 Lakewood residents are current employees at NASA, and an estimated <br />25 Lakew60d residents are employed by contractors at NASA Glenn, all of these positions may be affected <br />by these cuts; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the trickle down effect would impact businesses which interact with NASA locally, <br />regionally and nationally; and, <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Ohio must continue to demonstrate the vision, will and leadership to support NASA <br />Glenn Research Center and urge President Bush to continue future aeronautics at the Center, whereby <br />targeting the goals for space exploration. Now therefore; <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO' <br /> <br />Section 1 That the City of Lakewood does hereby urge Ohio!s Congressional Delegation to oppose <br />President Bush's proposed j ob cuts at NASA Glenn Research Center and further take the necessary action to <br />support Representative Dennis Kucinich and the Mayors and Managers Association's Coalition against job <br />cuts at NASA <br /> <br />Section 2, The Clerk of Council is hereby directed to forward certified copies of this Resolution <br />immediately upon passage and approval to the President of the United States, NASNs Administrator, Glenn <br />Research Center's Director, and each of the elected Senators and Congressmen in the State of Ohio, as well <br />as all members of the Mayors and Managers Association of Cuyahoga County, <br /> <br />Section 3.
