<br />. A RESOLUTION, pursuant to an Act of Congress (Public Law 96-388, October 7, 1980)
<br />the United States Holocaust Memorial Council designates the Days of Remembrance of the
<br />Victims of the Holocaust to be Sunday, May 1st through Sunday, May 8, 2005, including the
<br />international Day of Remembrance known as Yom Hashoah, May 6, 2005
<br />
<br />WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic p~rsecution and
<br />annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945
<br />Jew:? were the primary victims - six million were murdered; Gypsies, the handicapped, and Poles
<br />were, also targeted for destruction or decimation for racial, ethnic, or national reasoDs" Millions
<br />more" including homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war and political
<br />dissidents, also suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi tyranny, and;
<br />
<br />WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral
<br />responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments, and;
<br />
<br />WHEREAS, the people of the City of Lakewood should always remerrtber the terrible
<br />events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution, and tyranny, and;
<br />
<br />WHEREAS, the people of the City of Lakewood should actively rededicate ourselves to
<br />the principles of individual fteedom in a just society, and;
<br />
<br />WHEREAS, the Days of Remembrance have been set-aside for the people of the City of
<br />Lakewood to remember the victims of the Holocaust as well as to reflect on the need for respect
<br />of all people. Now therefore; \
<br />
<br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO'
<br />
<br />Section 1. That this Council and Mayor designate and proclaim the week of Sunday, May
<br />1st through Sunday, May 8, 2005, as Days of Remembrance in memory of the victims of the
<br />Holocaust, and in honor of the survivors, as well as the rescuers and liberators, and further
<br />proçlaim that we, as citizens of the City of Lakewood, Ohio should strive to overcome
<br />intolerance and indifference through learning and remembrance.
<br />
<br />Section 2 That a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of this meeting
<br />
<br />Section 3. It is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council concerning
<br />and relating to the passage of this resolution were adopted in an open meeting of :this Council,
<br />and that all such deliberations of this Council and of any of its committees that resulted in such
<br />formal action were in meetings open to the public in compliance with all legal requirements
<br />
