<br />RESOLUTION NO' 7993-05 <br /> <br />BY' <br /> <br />Corri-gan, DeÌllro, Dever, Dunn, <br />FítzGe~ãld, Madigan, Se~lie. <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the US. Surgeon General states that mental health is fundamental to health and <br />indispensable to personal well-being, family and interpersonal relationships, and contributes to community <br />and society; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the U.S. Surgeon General confirms that mental illness affects one in fiye Americans <br />every year, regardless of age, gender, race, etbJJicity, religion or economic status; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the U.S. Surgeon General has found that a range of treatments exists for most mental <br />disorders and the efficacy of mental health treatments are well documented; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, research has proven that mental illnesses, such as depression, obsessive-compulsive <br />disorder and schizophrenia are biologically based brnih disorders and are just like any other physical <br />diseases, such as cancer and diabetes. With treatment, people living with mental illness can lead,full and <br />productive lives; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Cuyahoga County Community Mental Health Board (CCCMHB) is responsible <br />¡and accoUIitable for the planning, funding and monitoring of public ~ental health services in cnyahoga <br />County. The CCCMHB works with 34 provider agencies to develop a system of care that enables adults <br />and children to have access to quality and culturally competent mental health services to help control their <br />illness and achieve personal goals; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the guiding principles of community mental health care have always been <br />comprehensiveness, cost-efficiency, effective management and high-quality and consmner-responsive <br />services, and these principles are now being adopted by private and public heaIthcare payo~; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the National Mental Health Association, the National Council for Community <br />Behavioral Healthcare and their national partners observe Mental Health Month every May to raise <br />awareneSs and understanding of mental health and illness; now, therefore' <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF omo: <br /> <br />Section 1. That May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month; and that we call upon all <br />Lakewood citizens, governinent agencies, public and_private institutions, businesses and schools to <br />recommit our community to increasing awareness and understanding of mental illness and the need for <br />!appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses. <br /> <br />Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be and she is hereby authorized and directed to forward a <br />copy of this resolution to the Cuyahoga County Community Mental Health Board c/o William M. Denihan, <br />and that a copy of this resolution be spread upon the minutes of this meeting: <br /> <br />Section 3.
