RESOLUTION NO 8132-06 BY' Antonio, Butler, Demro, Dever, <br /> FitzGerald, Madigan. <br /> A RESOLUTION supporting Cuyahoga County's proposed ballot resolution <br /> to place before the voters a tobacco excise tax that if passed by the voters at the <br /> November 7, 2006 election will produce a dedicated. public sector arts and culture <br /> funding source essential for sustaining and expanding the public good of healthy <br /> and vibrant arts and culture assets. <br /> WHEREAS, The City of Lakewood for the past 75 years been recognized for its arts and <br /> culture programs and organizations; <br /> WHEREAS, Greater Cleveland is the manufacturing and distribution center of Northeast <br /> Ohio's $1 3 billion arts and culture indushy; <br /> WHEREAS, over 3,000 family-supporting jobs innon-profit arts and culture sector aze <br /> produced in Cuyahoga County; ~ <br /> WHEREAS, Tourist and convention planners rank the City of Cleveland number one as a <br /> destination city for its classical music, theater and museums; j <br /> WHEREAS, Greater Cleveland's high concentration of internationally renowned arts and <br /> cultural institutions and individual performing, visual, literazy and media artists is essential for <br /> greater Cleveland area to be a thriving destination of choice for idea and knowledge-based S <br /> businesses and entrepreneurs that represent the new economies of the 21st century; <br /> WHEREAS, Lakewood's neighborhoods are poised to benefit through arts and culture <br /> and revitalization which can eontdbute to Lakewood's legacy of being a great place to live and <br /> raise families through arts and culture such as the Lakewood Arts Festival, Car Culture Show, <br /> Community Festival, Beck Center and others. <br /> WHEREAS, ttus Council can be a leader in promoting public policies in the State of <br /> Oh{o that cultivate arts and culture; <br /> WHEREAS, Lakewood arts and culture assets provide important intrinsic value for all of <br /> its citizens by offering life changing and af£uming experiences that distinguish our <br /> neighborhoods as unique places to live, work, raise families and start new businesses, <br /> WHEREAS, the proposed excise tax if passed will benefit the City of Lakewood by <br /> providing needed resources to preserve and expand Lakewood's arts and culture assets; now, <br /> therefore, <br /> BE TT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO <br /> Section 1, That this Council endorses and supports Cuyahoga County's ballot <br /> resolution to place before the voters a tobacco excise tax that if passed by the voters at the <br /> November 7, 2006 election will produce a dedicated. public sector arts and culture funding source <br /> essential for sustaining and expanding the public good that comes from healthy and vibrant arts <br /> and culture assets <br /> Section 2 that the Clerk of Council be and is hereby authorized and directed to forward <br /> a certified copyof this resolution to the Cuyahoga County Board of Commissioners; 1219 <br /> Ontario Street, Cleveland, OH 44113, and that a copy of this resolution be spread upon the <br /> minutes of this meeting. / ~ /o <br /> Adopted: a-0 O6 1~2%~'~~`~( <br /> resident <br /> ~ , ~ <br /> Clerk of uncil <br /> <br /> Approved: ~G*r- .3, aDO~o <br /> Mayor <br /> <br />
