<br />REFERRED TO THE COMMITTEE OF THE <br />WHOLE 11/20/06. <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO 8149-06 <br /> <br />BY' Antonio, Butler, Demro, Dever, <br />FitzGerald, ~ffidigan, Seelie. <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION to urge the Ohio Geueral Assembly to include a fine arts <br />requirement 'Within the new "Ohio Core" graduation requirements as recommended by <br />the Taft Administration. <br /> <br />WHEREAS an education in the arts prepares students for higher education, the <br />workplace, and citizenship in this competitive global economy, in which creativity and <br />ingenuity often trump other skills and determine success, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS the arts prepare students for tbe workplace with skills such as <br />problem solving, creative thinking, team work, and understanding different cultures, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS research shows that students who participate in the arts outperform <br />non-arts peers on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS the arts are part of a comprehensive education and aligns with the <br />recommendations from the U S Department of Education that call for all students to <br />complete a unit in the arts or performing arts as part of its definition of a college <br />preparatory curriculum, and <br /> <br />WHEREAS all major national education associations and the National PTA, tbe <br />National Governor's Association, and the National Association of State Boards of <br />Education recognize that the arts are part of a comprehensive, complete curriculum for all <br />students to learn, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY TIlE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO <br /> <br />Section I. Thit this body urges the Ohio General Assembly to consider including <br />the arts as a requirement in the "Ohio Core" as it continues to deliberate on this important <br />matter, <br /> <br />Section 2.
