RESOLUTION NO. 8.368-09 BY: Antonio, Bullock, Butler, Dever, <br />Madigan, Powers, Summers. <br />A Resolution honoring Lakewood Resident Captain Harry Anderson, retired Cleveland Cliffs Great Lakes <br />captain, for celebrating his 100' birthday October 5, 2009. <br />WHEREAS, as a boy of ten--a small fish in a big pond--little Harry fell in love with sailing after his family <br />emigrated from Sweden to the United States, and at 17, worked his way up from the galley of an ore boat to taking the helm <br />of a mighty steam ship, and <br />WHEREAS, for nearly a half century Captain Anderson navigated the Five Great Lakes, and <br />WHEREAS, Captain Anderson, has gained a national reputation for captaining the steamship William G. <br />Mather, now a dockside museum and part of the Great Lakes Science Center, and <br />WHEREAS, Captain Anderson spent decades returning to the Mather's decks, eagerly sharing his Great Lake <br />yarns, inspiring younger generations from around the world, and <br />WHEREAS, this walking maritime reference book and seafaring character seemingly out of a Herman <br />Melville novel, earned the nickname "Heavy Seas Harry" because he kept his ship on course, undaunted by raging <br />Nor'westers, indifferent to squalls slashing the stem, never resorting to throwing down anchor because of inclement weather, <br />and <br />WHEREAS, his walk still is upright in spite of sporting the weighty Maritime honors of the U.S. Merchant <br />Marines WWII Victory Bar, the Defense Bar, the Zone Bar and the U.S. Coast Guard Good Conduct Ribbons and a Silver <br />Medal for his heroic rescue while battling raging winds, turbulent seas and swift currents while steering a frail craft, and <br />WHEREAS, Captain Anderson, a proud centenarian, cuts an elegant figure, dressed in Captain's uniform as <br />he presides over events aboard the moored William G. Mather where he continues to actively volunteer, instilling <br />enthusiasm and joy in the honorable life. of maritime duty; now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br />Section 1. That this Council of the City of Lakewood bestow upon Captain Harry Anderson due recognition <br />and honor for a life lived fully on the momentous occasion of his 100' birthday and further wish him continued years of <br />health, happiness and prosperity. <br />Section 2.
