RESOLUTION NO. 8574-12 BY: Anderson, Bullock, Suris, <br />Madigan, Nowlin, Smith. <br />A RESOLUTION to welcome the University of Akron to Lakewood and to <br />express gratitude for being selected as the ideal location for the furtherance of its mission to <br />develop enlightened members of society. <br />WHEREAS, the University of Akron was founded as a private school known as <br />Buchtel College in 1870 with an enrollment of 198 and later offered the world's first courses in <br />rubber chemistry in sync with the thriving local industrial giants Goodyear, Firestone, and <br />Goodrich, and <br />WHEREAS, in 1988, the University established the world's first College of <br />Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering -now the largest academic program of its kind in the <br />world and today the University serves over 29,000 students in its diverse programs, and <br />WHEREAS, the University of Akron Lakewood is astate-of--the-art facility <br />offering the finest tech-enhanced and tech-supported community space in the city, offering <br />students access to all UA resources, including regional education and local community <br />partnerships, and <br />WHEREAS, the University of Akron is committed to offering the educational <br />opportunities requested by the Lakewood community and businesses, and will enter into strategic <br />partnerships with other institutions of higher learning as needed in order to meet community <br />needs; now, therefore <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br />Section 1. On behalf of the residents of Lakewood, this Council would like to express <br />its sincere appreciation and gratitude to the University of Akron for choosing Lakewood as an <br />ideal location to help fulfill its Vision 2020, for enhancing the heart of Downtown Lakewood, <br />and furthering economic development and intellectual capital in our city. <br />Section 2.
