RESOLUTIONNO. 8999 -18 BY: Anderson, Bullock, George, <br />Litten, O'Leary, O'Malley, Rader. <br />A Resolution to declare the month of May 2018 as Bike Month in Lakewood, Ohio. <br />WHEREAS every year since 1956, the League of American Bicyclists has sponsored <br />National Bike Months in May as a chance to showcase the benefits of bicycling and to encourage <br />new ridership, and; <br />WHEREAS in 2012, after several years of community engagement, data collection, and <br />collaboration between the City and local bike advocacy groups, City Council adopted the City's <br />first Bicycle Master Plan which articulated the goal of establishing bicycling as a main means of <br />transportation and accommodating cyclists' through policies, programs, and projects, and; <br />WHEREAS since adoption of the Bicycle Master Plan the City and its partners have <br />taken significant steps to improve safety and mobility for cyclists including the investments <br />made last year in striping dedicated bike lanes on Warren Avenue and Clifton Extension, <br />installing new bike parking facilities through our Bike Racks for Business program, and <br />partnering with Bike Cleveland and Bike Lakewood on a series of safety lectures and rides, <br />among many other pro - cycling initiatives, and; <br />WHEREAS Lakewood is home to Spin Bike Shop and Beat Cycles, both of whom <br />generously contribute their expertise, enthusiasm, and example to educate cyclists, promote <br />cycling, and provide leadership to the active cycling community in Lakewood, and; <br />WHEREAS these initiatives and partnerships have been recognized by the League of <br />American Bicyclists which in 2017 designated Lakewood a Bicycle Friendly Community at the <br />Bronze Level, and; <br />WHEREAS throughout the month of May the City of Lakewood and its partners will be <br />promoting and hosting cycling events such as Bike to Work Day and Bike to School Week which <br />will most certainly bring attention to the City's recent enhancements to cycling infrastructure and <br />also maintain enthusiasm for pursuing new cycling goals; now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br />Section 1. That this Council joins with cities and towns across the nation to hereby <br />declare the month of May to be Bike Month in the City of Lakewood. <br />Section 2. That this Council would like to recognize Bike Lakewood, the Planning <br />Department, H2O, the Planning Commission, Lakewood Police Department, Lakewood City <br />Schools, Lakewood Public Library and all other community partners who have worked in <br />collaboration with the City now and in the past on cycling events and other cycling improvement <br />projects. <br />
