Check all that apply:
❑Safe & Secure ❑Vibrant Neighborhoods
El Economic Development
®Other: resiliency
®Sound Governance
1. Provide a narrative description of your idea in 250 words or less. Attach a separate sheet if necessary:
This proposal calls for the City to purchase Green -e certified renewable energy to match 100% of electricity
consumed at City Hall and the W WTP. This renewable energy certificate product can easily be added to the
City's existing electric contracts with First Energy which represent approximately 40% of the electricity used
by the City. After Jan. 1, 2019, the City expects to have the option to purchase 100 percent clean power from
NOPEC, its other supplier.
2. Briefly explain how this will benefit the community:
By prioritizing clean energy, the City will be setting an example and demonstrating leadership to residents and
neighboring communities. Through this leadership we will have an opportunity to indirectly have an impact on
reducing pollution that causes asthma, heart problems, birth defects, and climate change. Furthermore, by
purchasing clean energy now, the City will be prepared for possible future regulations mandating clean energy
sources.
3. Estimated expense (provide a range):
A Green -e certified renewable energy certificate product could be added to the remaining 33 months of the
City's existing contract with First Energy for approximately $8,925.00, which is about $3,245 per year. Pricing
for NOPEC is unknown (although we currently receive 50 percent green power at no additional cost).
4. If applicable, summarize any proposals or discussions from the past that are related to this priority.
In 2017 Council agreed to make clean energy a budget priority during 2018. In 2018, the Resiliency Task Force
launched and has studied clean energy solutions.
008 - Reso 9020 -18 - as substituted by Finance 1011/18
