Provide a narrative description of your idea in 250 words or less. Attach a separate sheet if necessary:
There are approximately 180 miles of sidewalks in Lakewood. We are asking for the % mile of the Clifton Blvd Ext to be
included in Walkable Lakewood (1 mile total). The Northwest end of Lakewood, where we are asking for sidewalks, is
residential. As we have seen many enjoying the bike paths, we are sure that even more in the area will take advantage
of these sidewalks Ideally these new sidewalks would connect to Forest Rd. sidewalks on either side, as well as West
Forest. We are also proposing a cross walk to re- connect Forest. In the 1960's this community was divided by Clifton Rd.,
this project will also help to bring this neighborhood back together.
2. Briefly explain how this will benefit the community: With the addition of added connectivity to existing
sidewalks and an added cross walk, the whole neighborhood will become more walkable. Increasing the area's
walkability will promote healthier living and help knit together a community that was divided.
3. Estimated expense (provide a range): Per ODOT, District 12, an estimated cost for sidewalks on the Ext. is: $8 a
square foot. With a 5 foot sidewalk for approximately 1 mile (1/2 mile on each side) the estimated cost would be:
$250,000, which includes $30,000 for planning and preliminary work. There may be grant money that the city can apply
for to cover some of the cost. A crosswalk will take more research as there are several options.
4. If applicable, summarize any proposals or discussions from the past that are related to this priority.
In 2013 residents of Clifton Park contacted NOACA, ODOT, and the city of Lakewood requesting that the %2 mile stretch
of the Clifton Blvd. Ext. be reduced from 4 lanes to 2 with bike lanes and sidewalks added. Councilmembers Tom Bullock
and David Anderson wrote a letter in support of the project. In 2017 the vehicular lanes were reduced to two lanes and
bike lanes were added with stations.
021 Reso 9020 -18 - as substituted by Finance 10/1/18
