Anderson, Bullock, George, Litten <br />O'Leary, O'Malley, Rader <br />RESOLUTION NO. 9044 -18 BY: <br />A RESOLUTION to recognize Cerny Shoes for its incredible longevity as a flagship <br />retailer on Lakewood's Detroit Ave. since 1903. <br />WHEREAS, in 1903 William P. Cerny founded Zak Brothers Shoes — an eleven -store <br />chain that serviced the footwear needs of customers on both the east and west sides of Cleveland, <br />and; <br />WHEREAS, William P. Cerny sold the sole remaining Zak Brothers location in <br />Lakewood to Ron and LaVerne Cerny who changed its name to Cerny Shoes and; <br />WHEREAS, in the 1980s, current owners Don and Marlene Cerny became the third <br />generation of the Cerny family in the footwear business, successfully operating Cerny Shoes <br />through 2018 and; <br />WHEREAS, despite changes in the times, changes in fashion, and changes in the <br />economy, the endurance of Cerny Shoes has demonstrated that quality products and excellent <br />customer service never go out of style. Now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, OHIO: <br />Section 1. That this Council does hereby recognize three generations of the Cerny family <br />for providing 115 years of quality products and top tier customer service to Lakewood residents. <br />Section 2. That this Council does hereby recognize Don and Marlene Cerny, the most <br />recent owners and operators of Cerny Shoes for their hard work, entrepreneurial spirit, and <br />contributions to Lakewood's business community and civic life. <br />Section 3. That the Clerk of Council is hereby authorized and directed to present a <br />certified copy of this resolution to Don and Marlene Cerny upon their retirement from Cerny <br />Shoes. <br />Section 4. It is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council concerning <br />and relating to the passage of this resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council, <br />and that all such deliberations of this Council and any of its committees that resulted in such <br />formal action, were in meetings open to the public, in compliance with all legal requirements. <br />Adopted: 1�:Is 111 <br />Approved: — <br />MAYOR <br />
