MINUTES OF THE COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE
FEBRUARY 1, 2020
Auditorium
Present: Councilmembers Bullock, Litten, Neff, O'Malley, Rader, Shachner
Also: Clerk Bach, Deputy Clerk Lascu, at-large applicants and several members of the public
Call to Order: 9:02 a.m.
President O'Malley called the meeting to order and introduced the agenda, which consisted of
candidate interviews for the vacant at-large Council position. The interviews were conducted as
follows:
Steve Skantzos Interview
Mr. Skantzos delivered an opening statement that highlighted his experiences as a lifelong
Lakewood resident, work as an electrician, and helping with his family's small business which is
based in Lakewood. He noted that he has been coming to Council meetings for the last 6 years
and has remained involved with his union.
In response to Councilmember Rader's question about how cities should be taking on
sustainability and global climate change, Mr. Skantzos indicated that Lakewood has a history of
being an adaptable community and that it can continue to make changes moving forward.
Vice President Litten asked Mr. Skantzos, if selected, whether he would run for the position
again in 2 years and what he envisions are the 2-3 things that are important for Lakewood to
work on over the next 2 years. Mr. Skantzos indicated that he was unsure at the moment, wanting
to defer to what the community needs, but stated a desire to run for the position if selected. He
added that there are major projects on the horizon for Lakewood and that he would like to help
play a role in seeing that they affect the city positively for the next 20-30 years.
In response to Councilmember Neff's question about the most significant asset he brings to
Council, Mr. Skantzos spoke about his strong work ethic, good listening skills, and knowledge of
the construction industry.
Council President O'Malley inquired about Mr. Skantzos' perspective as a small business owner
and what that has taught him over the years. Mr. Skantzos noted his ability to communicate with
residents of a variety of backgrounds, which he cultivated at his family's restaurant.
Mr. Skantzos then asked Councilmembers what their priorities are over the next few years.
President O'Malley indicated that working on the city's sewer system and maintaining strong
financial footing as a municipality will be major priorities for the city. Vice President Litten
added that managing growth and development in thoughtful ways will be important as well.
1
