Discussion: Councilmember Bullock noted how racial equity touches all facets of society and <br /> added that a balanced view is needed to examine policing, as police are often trusted public <br /> servants. He asked that police representatives be present for discussion about the department. <br /> John Hill, a Lakewood resident, requested more transparency of what police department <br /> policies are. <br /> President O'Malley shared comments from Sydney Heckler, a Lakewood resident, who <br /> opposes the use of tear gas. Chief Malley noted that the department does not maintain tear gas <br /> or possess it for riot control. <br /> President O'Malley shared comments from Samir Kulkarnay, a public commenter, who <br /> supports police reform. <br /> Laura Rodriguez-Carbone, a Lakewood resident, shared her brother's and father's experiences <br /> dealing with police stops and violence in years past. She also expressed a desire to better <br /> implement a civilian police review board and advance racial equity. <br /> Councilmember Rader stated that public trust can be built by being better communicators, and <br /> highlighting things that the Lakewood police department is doing to be a leading one in the <br /> region. <br /> Councilmember Kepple stated the need for better access to public information. <br /> Councilmember Bullock asked questions of Ms. Rodriguez-Carbone's family's experiences <br /> with police and inquired as to whether they encountered them in Lakewood. Ms. Rodriguez- <br /> Carbone stated that they occurred in other communities. Her full public comment is attached. <br /> McKenzie Levi — 14811 Hilliard Ave. —Mr. Levi thanked local police for their recent efforts. <br /> He stated that he does not support the defund police movement. He also touted his experience <br /> in the public safety field. <br /> On the motion: A roll call vote was taken as follows: <br /> Yeas —Bullock, Kepple, Litten, Neff, O'Malley, Rader, Shachner <br /> Nays —None <br /> Motion passed. The communication was referred to the Public Safety Committee. <br /> 16. Communication from Councilmember Litten regarding racism as a public health crisis. (pg. <br /> 24) <br /> President O'Malley made a motion, seconded by Vice President Litten to receive and file the <br /> communication. <br />
