Provide a brief narrative description of your idea:
Since 2015, City Council and the previous Administration have expressed support for prioritizing public art. Numerous murals,
the new public art piece at Wagar Park, and the LAMP program are examples of positive steps forward. In 2020, as it has
done in 2018 and 2019, the City should continue to facilitate public art project installations.
We should aim to complete at least two and ideally five additional public art projects as well as to expand our list of engaged
artists and building owners/managers interested in public art. Specifically, several meetings to educate and engage the
interest of both artists and building owners/managers should be held to "seed the line" for future projects and to develop a
critical mass of stakeholder needed for a community -wide plan.
2. Briefly explain how this will benefit the community:
According to Americans for the Arts, the benefits of public art can generally be grouped into four categories:
• Engage civic dialogue and community
• Attract attention and economic benefit
• Connect artists with communities
-9 Enhance public appreciation of art
3. Estimated expense (provide a range):
$100,000: $75,000 for one or more large installations %.0 1 1 V
I iz r. I A 1CLA-f-
I
4. If applicable, describe any past proposals or discussions that are related to this priority.
In 2015, Council established the Public Art Task Force with the intention of creating a public art strategy for the City and to advise the City on
the many benefits of public art. Six residents with backgrounds in the arts came forward to serve on this Task Force which met between
December 2015 and September 2016. The Task Force identified nine recommendations for moving forward with a Public Arts Program.
In 2016, Council used the Finance Committee budget priority process to elevate public art as a City priority for 2017. In response, the Planning
Department issued an RFP for a street mural on a section of Rosewood Ave. In 2018, Council also prioritized public art, and the LAMP program
resulted. Since then, multiple murals have been installed and a larger public art piece for Wagar Park has been commissioned.
5. If applicable, describe any preliminary discussions you have had with colleagues, the
administration
and/or your constituents about this priority.
Continuation of unanimous sur)r)ort since 2016 by City Council and the previous Administration.
