Bull-ock j Kepple f Z,1tt elif Neff, <br />0' Malley, Rader, Srlr�:c~hrle�: <br />RESOLUTION N0.2021-06 BY: <br />A RESOLUTION proclaiming the Month of January 2021 as the City of Lakewood <br />joins the Firefighter Cancer Support Network and the International Association of Fire <br />Fighters declaring January 2021 Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month; <br />WHEREAS, firefighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line of duty deaths <br />in professional firefighters and has reached epidemic levels in the United States; and <br />WHEREAS, Lakewood Fire Department is in the area of the Cuyahoga County <br />within the State of Ohio described as front line first responders, wherein the potential hazards <br />of loss of life and injury can occur to its members; and <br />WHEREAS, firefighters have a 9% greater chance of developing cancer and a 14% <br />greater risk of dying from that cancer than the general population; and <br />WHEREAS, the excess cancer risk among firefighters reflects chronic exposure to <br />known carcinogens and other hazards as part of job -related tasks and responsibilities; and <br />WHEREAS, firefighter contamination and cancer risk reduction procedures are the <br />first line of defense for reducing the incidence of cancer in the fire 39 service; and <br />WHEREAS, early detection of cancer through routine screening leads to earlier <br />treatment, associated with better disease outcomes, including improved survival and reduced <br />morbidity; and <br />WHEREAS, this Council support legislation for a National Firefighter Cancer <br />Awareness Month; and be it further the general population needs to be made aware of the <br />cancer risk for firefighters. <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br />Section 1. That this Council and Mayor designate and proclaim January 2021 as <br />Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Lakewood and call upon the citizens of <br />Lakewood to participate in supporting legislation for a National Firefighter Cancer <br />Awareness Month; and be it further <br />Section 2. That the City of Lakewood will be a leader in developing partnerships and <br />collaborations directed at providing fire service personnel the training, best practices, early <br />
