A K E 'W' D D D,
Regular police presence (or security guards) and dedicated park staff who are trained to engage
in a positive and encouraging manner with members of the community, and in particular, with
the youth.
Volunteer program and training for park guardians/monitors which incorporates youth
participation.
Commitment from the City of Lakewood to host more community events at the park (movie
nights, etc.)
Improvements to Existing Structures
Newer backboards and rims for Basketball hoops
Thick padding added to metal poles of Basketball hoops for safety.
Higher netting extending from the outfield around Usher Field to prevent balls from going onto
the court
General Additions
Availability of Cornhole boards
Availability of portable hoops for younger or beginner players
A bin or container to hold a supply of basketballs for the court
The LOBC understands that not all suggestions on this list may be feasible. However, we
desire to continue to work with city leaders to develop an action plan that will maximize
investment in Madison Park to coincide with an eventual park redesign. The LOBC recommends
including surrounding residents and businesses surrounding the park in a focused conversation
to discuss the feasibility of redesigning the park and parking lot to enhance safety and promote
diversity and inclusion.
Respectfully,
Laura Rodriguez-Carbone, Co-Chair, Lakewood Anti-Racism Task Force
On behalf of the Lakewood Basketball Outdoor Committee
3
