2, 1997), people across the United States recognized National Gun Violence Awareness <br />Day and wear orange in tribute to - <br />(1) Hadiya Pendleton and other victims of gun violence; and <br />(2) the loved ones of those victims; and <br />WHEREAS, the idea was inspired by a group of Hadiya's friends, who asked their <br />classmates to commemorate her life by wearing orange; they chose this color because <br />hunters wear orange to announce themselves to other hunters when out in the woods and <br />orange is a color that symbolizes the value of human life; and <br />WHEREAS, anyone can join this campaign by pledging to wear orange in June, to <br />help raise awareness about gun violence; and <br />WHEREAS, by wearing orange in June Americans will raise awareness about gun <br />violence and honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors; and <br />WHEREAS, we renew our commitment to reduce gun violence and pledge to do <br />all we can to keep firearms out of the wrong hands, and encourage responsible gun <br />ownership to help keep our children safe; and <br />WHEREAS, as set forth in Section 2.12 of the Third Amended Charter of the City <br />of Lakewood, this Council by a vote of at least two thirds of its members determines that <br />this resolution is an emergency measure and that it shall take effect immediately, and that <br />it is necessary for the immediate preservation of the public property, health, and safety and <br />to provide for the usual daily operation of municipal departments in that Gun Safety Month <br />should be recognized during the month of June; now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, OHIO: <br />Section 1. That June is hereby declared to be National Gun Violence Awareness <br />Day. All citizens are encouraged to support their local communities' efforts to prevent the <br />tragic effects of gun violence and to honor and value human lives. <br />Section 2. That all residents are encouraged to store guns safely; guns should be <br />locked, unloaded and stored separately from ammunition to prevent unintended access. <br />Section 3. It is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council <br />concerning and relating to the passage of this resolution were adopted in an open meeting <br />of this Council, and that all such deliberations of this Council and of any of its committees <br />that resulted in such formal action were in meetings open to the public in compliance with <br />all legal requirements. <br />Section 4. This resolution is hereby declared to be an emergency measure <br />necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, property, health, safety and <br />welfare in the City and for the usual daily operation of the City for the reasons set forth <br />and defined in the preamble to this resolution, and provided it receives the affirmative vote <br />
