All members voted in favor. Motion passed. Minutes <br /> approved. <br /> Communication from Councilmembers Rader & Shachner regarding affordable <br /> housing <br /> Chairman Bullock made opening remarks regarding tonight's meeting, noting that while other <br /> hearings on this topic have focused on affordable housing generally and the rental market, that <br /> this hearing would focus on affordability of owner-occupied homes. He established that the goal <br /> of these hearings has been to understand trends, barriers, and possible solutions to housing <br /> affordability. <br /> Councilmember Bullock referenced the attached letter from Patricia Wellborn who participated <br /> in the committee's previous two hearings on this topic. <br /> At the invitation of the Chair, Mr. Andrews of Lakewood Alive discussed Lakewood Alive's <br /> various programs to promote affordable housing. He described Lakewood Alive's various <br /> partnerships with the city, finance institutions, volunteers, and other organization which are <br /> leveraged in the interest of promoting safe, affordable housing. He remarked that one aspect of <br /> housing affordability is the ability to maintain one's home, pay for upkeep and utilities, which <br /> Lakewood Alive programs support. He further remarked that Lakewood Alive programs help to <br /> set the stage for new families and individuals to move into Lakewood and seek out affordable <br /> housing. <br /> Chairman Bullock and Mr. Andrews discussed the challenge of rising property tax rates and the <br /> impact on seniors. Mr. Andrews expressed a commitment to educating qualifying seniors about <br /> the homestead exemption. <br /> 1 <br />
