Deferred 12/19/22 <br />Baker, Bullock, Kepple, Litten, <br />Shachner <br />RESOLUTION 2022-62 BY: <br />A RESOLUTION to designate the month of January 2023 as Poverty Awareness Month in the <br />City of Lakewood. <br />WHEREAS, poverty is a significant issue that affects millions of people in the United <br />States, including many in the city of Lakewood; and, <br />WI -AREAS, the wealth and income gap in the United States is growing, and the number <br />of people living in poverty is increasing each year; and, <br />WHEREAS, thirty percent of Lakewood residents live in or near poverty, including 13% <br />who live below poverty level; a rate that is higher than the national average; and, <br />WHEREAS, poverty is a root cause of many issues that people face, such as crime and <br />inadequate access to education, healthcare, and safe, affordable housing; and, <br />WHEREAS, it is important for the City of Lakewood to raise awareness about poverty <br />and its far-reaching negative impacts in our community and to recommit to policies, protections <br />and initiatives that can improve the lives of our community's most vulnerable; Now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY .OF LAKEWOOD, OHIO: <br />Section 1. That this Council and Mayor hereby designate the month of January 2023 as <br />Poverty Awareness Month in the City of Lakewood and to recommit ourselves to doing all that <br />we can to help those in need. <br />Section 2. That this Council resolves to not forget those experiencing poverty and to use <br />city resources and work collaboratively with community organizations and the business <br />community to address systemic poverty in Lakewood. <br />Section 3. That the Clerk of Council is hereby authorized and directed to send a certified <br />copy of this resolution to the state legislators representing Lakewood, the Cuyahoga County <br />Executive, and the Governor of the State of Ohio. <br />Section 4. It is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council concerning <br />and relating to the passage of this resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council, <br />and that all such deliberations of this Council and any of its committees that resulted in such <br />formal action, were in meetings open to the public, in compliance with all legal requirements. <br />Adopted: <br />L en, President of Council <br />Maureen M.
