that will thrive in tough conditions. Mr. Rader followed up asking what system is used to track
the trees. Mr. Krems indicated that the group worked hard on this question, noting that the Tree
Keeper product offered by Davey is good but requires a lot of upkeep and is expensive. Director
Gordon indicated that the city is integrating Tree Keeper into the Lakewood GIS system so that
planting sites can be quickly located. The system will be able to look at properties that have
opted out of planting and can target them for future mailings about plantings. The system can
also show where stumps are. The city is planning to remove the same amount of stumps as last
year.
Chair Rader noted that the Tree City USA growth strategy has been in place in Lakewood for 45
years and asked where the city is currently at with it. Mr. Bonvissuto stated that the
administration is waiting to hear back for the 46'year. Discussion ensued regarding the timing
of applications for grants and other sources of funding.
Councilmember Kepple asked if there is a plan for a summer watering program. Director Gordon
stated that Public Works will be hiring part time staff to man a watering truck in the summer, just
as the department did last year. Gator bags will also be added to each tree, which should help
with watering. It was noted that watering tanks and gator bags are critical in equity zones where
rental home rates are higher and there typically hasn't been much emphasis on resident watering.
Councilmembers and Public Works staff then discussed different methods of sidewalk
construction and tree maintenance that would help existing trees thrive.
Director Gordon delivered a brief presentation on the Public Works department's efforts on
urban forestry over the past year.
Councilmember Baker suggested planting trees along I-90 to reduce traffic noise and limit grass
cutting.
Public Works staff shared plans for the fall tree lawn tree plantings in equity zones, hoping for
more participants this year.
Mayor George thanked TEAB and city staff for their continued work and ideas, expressing
optimism for an improved tree canopy.
Chair Rader adjourned the meeting without objection at 7:06 p.m.
