Baker, Bullock, Kepple, Litten, <br />RESOLUTION NO.2023-28 Marx, Rader, Shachner <br />A RESOLUTION recognizing the week of May 14, 2023 as Peace Officer Memorial Week <br />in the City of Lakewood. <br />WHEREAS, in 1963 the Congress of the United States and President John F. Kennedy <br />proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week in which it falls as National <br />Police Week; and <br />WHEREAS, there are more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities <br />across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Lakewood Police Department; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1791, more than 24,000 law enforcement <br />officers in the United States have made the ultimate sacrifice and died or been killed in the line of <br />duty in 2022; and <br />WHEREAS, the members of the Lakewood Police Department play an essential role in <br />safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Lakewood; and <br />WHEREAS, it is important that all citizens know and understand the problems, duties and <br />responsibilities of their law enforcement agencies, as they work to protect the innocent against <br />deception and the weak against oppression or intimidation; now, therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD: <br />Section 1. The City of Lakewood expressly observes and dedicates the week of May 14 <br />through 20, 2023, as Peace Officer Memorial Week to commemorate law enforcement officers, <br />past and present, who by their commitment to the people of Lakewood have rendered critical <br />service and have established an enduring reputation for preserving the rights and security of all <br />citizens. <br />Section 2. The City of Lakewood encourages all citizens of Lakewood to observe Monday, <br />May 15, 2023, as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor of those peace officers who, through their <br />selfless courage, have given their lives in the performance of duty and humbly asks its citizens to <br />fly their flags at half-staff on this solemn day. <br />Section 3. That the Police Memorial Flag shall be flown in front of Lakewood City Hall <br />the week of May 14 through 20, 2023, and at half staff on May 15. 2023. <br />Section 4. It is found and determined that all formal actions of this Council concerning and <br />relating to this Resolution were adopted in an open meeting of this Council, and that <br />all deliberations of this Council and of any of its committees that resulted in such formal actions <br />were <br />056 <br />
