Report from Health & Human Services Committee regarding meetings held November 6,
2023. (to be provided)

Vice President Kepple delivered the following report:
The Health and Human Services Committee met earlier tonight. Councilman Rader and
I were joined by several Council colleagues as well as representatives from the
Cuyahoga County Board of Health, including Commissioner Roderick Harris, Margaret
Case, Brian Athey, Suzanne Hrusch, and Kevin Brennan. They provided us with their
2022 annual report and gave us an overview of the initiatives that are lesser known
from the Board of Health as well as their central vision of equity, accountability, and
education. They also gave us a report about the number of inspections taking place
recently in Lakewood. In this past year, 287 facility inspections per year are expected
for food, with 390 inspections having happened so far this year, with an average of 660
inspections. Additionally, the Board of Health issued 34 licenses for swimming pools
after 103 inspections. Further inspections included 18 school inspections, numerous
animal bite investigations, and the regular sampling of the water at Clifton Beach
occurring twice a week during the summer season. They also spoke about dedication to
equity, diversity, and inclusion, and potential connections with Lakewood’s anti-racism
plan as well as the climate action plan. The Health and Human Services Committee
voted to recommend the ordinance to renew Lakewood’s contract with the Cuyahoga
County Board of Health.

Motion by Vice President Kepple, seconded by President Litten, to receive and file the oral
report. All in favor. Motion passed.

2
