***NEW BUSINESS*** <br /> <br />10. RESOLUTION 2024-01 - <br /> A RESOLUTION honoring Lakewood High School senior Bode <br />Smith for his outstanding academic accomplishments, including achievement of a perfect <br />score on the ACT test.(pg. 62) <br />Motion by President Kepple, seconded by Vice President Shachner, to adopt Resolution 2024- <br />01. <br />Discussion: Councilmember Marx expressed immense pride in her grandson, Bode Smith, and <br />conveyed her joy in presenting the resolution to him, recognizing his outstanding academic <br />accomplishments. Councilmember Marx recognized her grandson not only as an intelligent <br />individual but also as a talented musician. <br />Councilman Baker praised Bode Smith as a prime example of the excellence fostered by <br />Lakewood Public Achools. He highlighted not only the school's role in supporting such <br />achievements but also Bode's individual dedication and hard work. <br />President Kepple shared her pride in Bode Smith's achievements. She underscored the <br />significance of his accomplishments for the community, showcasing the high standards and <br />potential of students in Lakewood. <br />On the motion: All in favor. Motion passed. Resolution 2024-01 adopted. <br />*** <br />11. Communication from Councilmembers Strebig, Kepple, Marx and Shachner regarding <br />resolution to oppose Ohio House Bill 68. (pg. 64) <br /> <br />Discussion: Councilmember Strebig expressed gratitude towards the community members who <br />courageously opposed House Bill 68. She criticized the Ohio General Assembly for its <br />counterproductive actions and targeted measures against children, citing this as a deliberate <br />assault on their well-being. Councilmember Strebig then read pertinent quotes from Martin <br />Niemoller and Michelle Obama, emphasizing the historical and moral context of the issue at <br />hand. <br />Vice President Shachner extended his appreciation to Councilmember Strebig and highlighted <br />Council's past resolutions against similar legislative actions. He condemned the invasive attempts <br />to regulate individuals' most intimate life choices, noting the Ohio General Assembly lawmakers' <br />disregard for voices of the LBGTQIA+ Community. Vice President Shachner shared his <br />appreciation for the community's engagement and dedication to this cause. <br />Councilmember Marx echoed Councilmember Strebig's sentiments, pointing to Lakewood’s <br />2016 Human Rights Ordinance, which affirmed the principle of equality for all individuals.
