RESOLUTION 2024-03 - A RESOLUTION to oppose Ohio House Bill 68, which restricts <br />gender-affirming healthcare and sports participation for transgender youth, undermining the <br />judgement of medical professionals, the recommendations of the Ohio High School Athletic <br />Association, and the loving intuition of the families who support transgender youth. (pg. 66) <br />Motion by President Kepple, seconded by Vice President Kepple, to adoptResolution 2024-03. <br />All in favor. Motion passed. Resolution 2024-03 adopted. <br />*** <br />13. RESOLUTION 2024-04 – A RESOLUTION to join with states, municipalities, and other <br />jurisdictions around the country to designate February as Black History Month in the City of <br />Lakewood, Ohio by celebrating African-American culture and paying tribute to the <br />contributions of African-Americans. (pg. 68) <br />Motion by President Kepple, seconded by Vice President Shachner, to adopt Resolution 2024- <br />04. <br />Discussion: President Kepple thanked the co-chairs of the Anti-Racism Task Force for their <br />review of the legislation. She expressed astonishment that Lakewood had not previously <br />recognized Black History Month with a resolution. President Kepple emphasized the importance <br />of acknowledging Black History throughout the year, not just in February, asserting that Black <br />History is an integral part of American history. <br />Councilman Rader shared his annual tradition of highlighting local Black leaders on Twitter who <br />have significantly contributed to the development of Northeast Ohio. He praised the exceptional <br />leadership within the Black Community. <br />Councilmember Strebig stressed the importance of celebrating diversitywithin the community <br />and voiced her support for the resolution tohonor the Black Community's contributions to <br />American society. <br />Vice President Shachner reflected on his educational experiences in Florida, noting the limited <br />exposure to Black history he received. He criticized the national curriculum for its lack of <br />integration of Black history, advocating for its importance and the need to celebrate it. <br />Councilman Bullock expressed his enthusiasm for the resolution and his support for its adoption, <br />highlighting the significance of recognizing Black History Month. <br />7 <br /> <br /> <br />
