ORDINANCE NO. 3-97 BY: Boscia, Corrigan, Flannery, George, Roth, Seelie, Smith AN EMERGENCY ORDINANCE to amend Section 516.01; Paragraph (e) of Section 516.03; Section 516.04; Section 516.05; Section 516.06; and Paragraph (b) of Section 516.07 of Chapter 516 of the Fair Housing code, and Section 1327.08 of Chapter 1327 of the Condominiums code of the Codified Ordinance of the City of Lakewood. prohibiting discrimination of persons in the sale or rental of housing. WHEREAS, it is the desire of Council to secure for all citizens their right to equal housing opportunities; and WHEREAS, discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, ancestry, handicap, familial status or national origin violate the personal dignity of individuals and perpetuate unfair housing practices; and WHEREAS, Council finds that residents obtain substantial social and professional benefits from living in a community where fair housing principles are established, and such a policy further promotes the general welfare and economic stability of the City; and WHEREAS, Council further finds that discriminatory acts and unfair housing practices threaten to deprive the City and its residents of the benefits ofinterreligious, interracial and intercultural associations; and WHEREAS, it is the intent of Council to further enhance and enforce fair housing policy and to prohibit discriminatory acts in connection with the sale and rental of dwellings; and WHEREAS, it is further the intent of Council to enact legislation furthering the aforesaid policy, and consistent with Title VIII of the 1968 Civil Rights Act as amended: now, therefore, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD. STATE OF OHIO: Section i. That Section 516.01 of the Fair Housing Chapter of the Codified Ordinances of the City of Lakewood, now reading as follows: 516.01 Policy It is hereby designated to be the continuing policy of the City to do ail things necessary and proper to secure for all citizens their fight to equal housing opportunities regardless of their race, color, creed, sex, religious belief, national origin, or physical handicap. shall be and the same is hereby amended to read as follows: 516.01 Policy It is hereby designated to be the continuing policy of the City to do all things necessary and proper to secure for all citizens their right to equal housing opportunities regardless of their race, color, religion, sex. sexual orientation, ancestry, handicap, familial status or national origin.
