AN ORDINANCE to amend Chapter 506, Dangerous and Vicious Animals of the Codified Ordinances of the City of Lakewood to prohibit Dangerous Animals from being kept in the City of Lakewood, to create an exception to the prohibition and a period in which existing Dangerous animals may be registered and permitted to remain in the City of Lakewood, and to increase restrictions and penalties for keeping a Dangerous Animals within the City of Lakewood. WHEREAS, non-compliance with the City's existing dangerous dog safety laws is widespread and poses a significant potential threat to public safety; and WHEREAS, improved penalties for non-compliance and strengthened registration and tracking requirements can improve dangerous dog safety compliance; and WHEREAS, the City of Lakewood has experienced a rising population of dangerous dogs in recent years, including canines of the breeds commonly known as Pit Bull Dogs and Canary Dogs; and WHEREAS, the City of Lakewood has experienced a rising population of dangerous dogs in recent years, including canines of the breeds commonly known as Pit Bull Dogs and Canary Dogs; and WHEREAS, for the City of Lakewood to preserve its safe, clean, and family- friendly character it needs dog safety policies appropriate to a compact community with small yards, families close together, and thousands of school-aged kids and senior citizens walking the streets; and WHEREAS, the protection of the health and safety of the residents of the City of Lakewood is of primary concern; Now Therefore, BE 1T ORDAINED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: Section 1. That Chapter 506, Dangerous and Vicious Animals, of the Codified Ordinances of the City of Lakewood, currently reading as follows:
