RESOLUTION N0. 5906-85 BY: Brown, Chinnock, Gallagher, Graham, <br /> McBride, Salmon, Wendling <br /> A RESOLUTION expressing to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio <br /> the opposition of the Council of the City of Lakewood to the application filed <br /> by the Ohio Bell Telephone Company for an increase in telephone rates (Formal <br /> Case No. 84-1435-TP-AIR) <br /> WHEREAS, this Council determines that there is a need to protect the <br /> residents of the City of Lakewood and the City Government itself against an un- <br /> reasonable increase in rates which the Ohio Bell Telephone Company is seeking <br /> by virtue of an application filed with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio <br /> under Formal Case No. 84-1435-TP-AIR, and <br /> WHEREAS, the Ohio Bell Telephone Company, which is requested an in- <br /> crease in rates of $137 million, is the principal supplier of telephone service <br /> in the City of Lakewood, Ohio, and <br /> WHEREAS, the 30% rate increase being requested by the Ohio Bell Tele- <br /> phone Company will have a substantial adverse effect upon those persons living <br /> on low and/or fixed incomes and the elderly whereby they will no longer be able <br /> to afford telephone service, which in today's society is virtually a necessity <br /> of life, and <br /> WHEREAS, This Council wishes to make known to the members of the PUCO <br /> its deep concern over the 30% rate increase being sought by the Ohio Bell Tele- <br /> phone Company and its opposition to said application (Formal Case No. 84-1435- <br /> TP-AIR); now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> Section 1. That this Council, for and on behalf of the residents of <br /> the City of Lakewood, hereby expresses to the members of the Public Utilities <br /> Commission of Ohio its deep concern over the $137 million, 30% rate increase be- <br /> ing requested by the Ohio Bell Telephone Company (Formal Case No. 84-1435-TP- <br /> AIR) and strongly urges the Commission to aggressively examine the economic <br /> basis for such request, to determine the fairness, equity and need for the <br /> increase in each particular type of service, and to conscientiously protect <br /> the interests of all affected residential customers. <br /> Section 2.
