Resolution No. 6133-87 BY~ Brown, Chinnock, Gallagher, Graham, <br /> McBride, Salmon, Wendling <br /> A RESOLUTION declaring participation by the City of <br /> Lakewood in the Bicentennial Celebrations of 'the Northwest <br /> Ordinance and the United States Constitution. <br /> WHEREAS, the year 1987 marks the 2fdGth anniversary of <br /> the passage of the Northwest Ordinance and the United States <br /> Constitution, and <br /> WHEREAS, the Northwest Ordinance is one of the <br /> fundamental documents in American history, growing out of the <br /> libertarian spirit of the American Revolution and leading <br /> directly to the creation of the great states of Ohio, Indiana, <br /> Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota, and <br /> WHEREAS, Ohio's role in the events associated with the <br /> Ordinance is unique in that it became the first state to enter <br /> the Union under the terms of the Ordinance, and <br /> WHEREAS, the Constitution, as ratified, embodies the <br /> ideals of liberty under law and was designed to maintain our free <br /> government in perpetuity as a more perfect union and to secure <br /> the blessings of liberty by consent of the governed, and <br /> WHEREAS, throughout the Bicentennial Constitution Year <br /> of 1987 every American will be moved to give special attention <br /> and regard to the unique and truly inspired actions undertaken <br /> in Philadelphia two hundred years ago by which a fragile and <br /> untested democracy transformed itself into a great nation ready <br /> and willing to take its rightful place among the Sovereign <br /> Peoples of the world, and <br /> WHEREAS, as citizens of the United States, Ohio, and <br /> the community of Lakewood, by virtue of our pride in the <br /> doctrines espoused in these two documents, do choose to <br /> Commemorate and Celebrate the 2GIGIth anniversary of their <br /> creation, now; therefore <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, <br /> STATE OF OHIO: <br /> Section 1. That the Mayor, all Members of this <br /> Council, the Officers of the Administration, and the people of <br /> the City of Lakewood, do hereby honor the Northwest Ordinance and <br /> the Constitution of the United States of America, and give public <br /> Thanksgiving for the special privilege that has been given to <br /> each of them to live their lives as free women and men in a free <br /> society. <br /> Section 2. That Members of this Council and the <br /> Mayor, alternately, shall invite a member of the community to <br /> each regularly scheduled meeting of this Council commencing with <br /> the meeting following the adoption of this Resolution, throughout <br /> the year of 1987, to read aloud the Preamble to the Constitution <br /> <br /> of the United States of America immediately following the taking <br /> <br /> of the Roll. <br /> 1 <br /> <br />
