RESOLUTION N0. 6255^88 BY: Browns Chinnocks Gazzana, Georges <br /> Grahams Wendling <br /> A RESOLUTION in recognition of Fair Housing Month and the twentieth <br /> anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 and Title VIII, affirming and <br /> supporting the constitutional rights of all citizens regardless of race, <br /> religion, color, sex or national origin to live where they choose. <br /> WHEREAS, it is the policy of this country, as set forth in the <br /> Constitution, for fair housing throughout the United States; and <br /> WHEREAS, this policy and the individual rights and responsibilities <br /> attendant on it are set forth in Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968; <br /> and <br /> WHEREAS, in 1987 Cuyahoga County continued to witness incidents of <br /> racial harassment and complaints of housing discrimination by race; and <br /> WHEREAS, studies document the continued incidence of discrimination <br /> in the Greater Cleveland housing market and the existence of segregated <br /> communities and school districts; and <br /> WHEREAS, there exist in this county areas which are integrating <br /> successfully and which are in need of support to assure their continued <br /> existence as racially diverse communities; and <br /> WHEREAS, for the past twenty years, the Month of April has been <br /> designated for commemoration of the Fair Housing Law, Title VIII of the Civil <br /> Rights Act of 1968; now, therefore, <br /> BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF <br /> OHIO: <br /> Section 1. That this Council and the City Administration wish to <br /> reaffirm their commitment to open housing and equal housing opportunity for <br /> all our citizens. <br /> Section 2. That it is the goal of this Council and City <br /> Administration to eliminate housing discrimination and assure the rights of <br /> every citizen to buy, rent or sell housing without regard to race, sex, <br /> religion, national origin or handicap, as guaranteed by Title VIII of the <br /> Civil Rights Act of 1968 as amended, and the laws of the State of Ohio. <br /> Section 3. That the Clerk of Council be, and she is hereby <br /> authorized and directed to forward. a certified copy of this Resolution to <br /> John E.
