RESOLUTION NO. <br /> <br />63;~7-89 <br /> <br /> BY:Brown, Chinnock, Gallagher, <br />Gazzana, Geor§e, Graham, Wendling <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION <br />service. <br /> <br />to commend Bessie L. Major for her public <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, <br />nine children, <br />and <br /> <br /> on November 11, 1917 Bessie L. Major, the third of <br />was born to Willie and Sylvia West in Mansfield, Texas, <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, she was valedictorian of her high school class, <br />awarded a scholarship to Weatherford Junior College and received a <br />Bachelor of Science degree in 1940 from Texas Wesleyan College, and <br />went on to earn severa! teaching certificates in the states of Texas, <br />New Jersey and Ohio, devoting 30 years to teaching the mentally <br />handicapped, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Bessie L. Major began her public service career by <br />joining the Women's Army Corps during World War II and she lost her <br />first husband Arthur Rowe, father of son Wi] liam, in the Normandy <br />invasion just months after their marriage, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, on July 11, 1947 Bessie L. Major married Joseph Major, <br />Jr. and they were the parents of two boys, Richard and Ronald, and a <br />daughter Joanna Dennis, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, as a volunteer at the Office on Aging for ten years <br />Bessie L. Major served on various committees, among them Nutrition, <br />Program, Activities, lntergenerational, Meal Evaluator, National <br />Council of Senior Citizens, Senior Advisory and Community Development <br />Citizens Advisory Committee, Gold Star member of the National Council <br />of Senior Citizens, and was recognized as a conscientious, effective <br />and dedicated member who so freely and willingly contributed her time, <br />talents and efforts for senior citizens, and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Bessie L. Major continued to express her love for <br />children after her retirement from teaching by tutoring children in the <br />Read to Me Program at Grant, Roosevelt and Madison schools; now, <br />therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That this Council and the Mayor extends to the <br />family of Bessie L. Major its appreciation and that of all of the <br />citizens of this community for their mother's public service as a <br />member of our community and her outstanding contribution to the <br />significant accomplishments of our Office on Aging. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be, and she is hereby <br />authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of this Resolution <br />to the family of Bessie L. Major, and that a copy of this Resolution be <br />spread upon the minutes of this meeting. <br /> <br /> <br />
