RESOLUTION NO. 6362-89 BY: <br /> <br />Brown, Chinnock, Gallagher, <br />George, Graham, Wendling <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION honoring Robert James Gedeon, III, United States Navy <br />Seaman Apprentice, who has made the supreme sacrifice while carrying out his <br />duties to our nation; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, on Wednesday morning, April 19, 1989, during gunnery <br />exercises off Puerto Rico, the lives of Robert J. Gedeon and 46 other sailors <br />were taken during an explosion of gun turret No. 2 on board the Battleship <br />USS Iowa; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, President George Bush memorialized the fallen sailors on <br />Monday, April 24, at a Memorial Service at Norfolk Naval Base in Norfolk, <br />Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Lakewood recognizes the dedication of Seaman <br />Gedeon and the sacrifice he has made for our country-- for its protection and <br />the well-being of all its citizens; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, members of Council and the Mayor mourn Robert's loss and <br />extend to his family their sincere sympathy in this hour of bereavement; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Seaman Robert J. Gedeon, III, a member of the United <br />States Naval Force, leaves behind him a memorial of good citizenship: he was <br />at all times courteous and considerate of the welfare of others and performed <br />faithfully the duties of his position; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the United States Navy continues, by necessity, as well as <br />tradition, to be America's first line of defense, but its real strength is <br />the quality of its men and women; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the United States Navy has played a significant role in <br />the events that have shaped the world of today, and our navy will continue as <br />an instrument of American diplomacy to exert a dominating influence in the <br />future events of the world; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, this Council believes it is appropriate to memorialize the <br />passing of Seaman Apprentice Robert J. Gedeon, III, for making the ultimate <br />sacrifice to his country and this community; <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF <br /> <br />OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That the Mayor of the City of Lakewood and this Council <br />extend to the family of Robert J. Gedeon, III, our sincere condolences and <br />those of all the citizens of this community on his passing. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council be, and she is hereby <br />authorized and directed to forward a certified copy of this Resolution to Mr. <br />and Mrs. Robert Gedeon, 1495 Elmwood Avenue, Lakewood, Ohio 44107, and that <br />a copy of this Resolution be spread upon the minutes of this meeting. <br /> <br />Adopted: ~ 6 <br /> <br />Approved: <br /> <br /> <br />
