RESOLUTION NO. <br /> <br />6659-91 BY: <br /> <br />Boscia, Gallagher, Gazzana, <br />George, Graham, Roth, Smith <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION honoring the memory of the Reverend Robert J. <br />Jenkins, Pastor of Saint Luke Parish. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Father Jenkins was born in East Cleveland on September <br />19, 1924, the son of Elizabeth (nee Thomas) and the late Charles Jenkins <br />and educated at St. Philomena grade school, Kirk Junior High School, <br />Cathedral Latin High School, Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit, and St. <br />Mary Seminary in Cleveland, and ordained to the priesthood on April 29, <br />1950 by the Most Reverend Edward F. Hoban, Archbishop of Cleveland; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in 1968 Father Jenkins arrived at St. Luke as <br />Associate Pastor and served as Acting Pastor during the long illness of <br />the late Monsignor Charles McBride, and was appointed Pastor in 1972; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Father Jenkins was accomplished as a parish <br />administrator who possessed a long range vision of his parish's~needs, <br />and was noted for his strong support of the parish school; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Father Jenkins gave quietly of his own money to help <br />the neediest of the 1400 families of St. Luke parish and through his <br />generosity no child was ever denied a St. Luke education for lack of <br />tuition; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Father Jenkins was respected as a leader by his peers <br />who elected him to the Priest Senate of the Diocese of Cleveland; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it was through Father Jenkins that a fulltime Chaplain <br />was assigned to Lakewood Hospital to administer to the spiritual needs of <br />patients and staff; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, under Father Jenkins' leadership St. Luke's ministry <br />to the elderly developed a program to drive residents of senior citizen <br />buildings to Sunday Mass and deliver the sacraments to shut-ins in their <br />homes and nursing facilities; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Father Jenkins was an unassuming and humble man who <br />accomplished great things in a quiet manner for the benefit of his parish <br />and the community without concern for personal reward; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Council, Mayor and citizens of Lakewood mourn the <br />death of Father Jenkins and recognize that we have derived great honor by <br />sharing citizenship with him in this community and that Lakewood will <br />long continue to reap the rewards of his stewardship as Pastor of St. <br />Luke Parish; now therefore, <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, STATE OF OHIO: <br /> <br /> Section 1. That we honor the memory and accomplishments of <br />Father Robert J. Jenkins and extend our deepest sympathy and condolences <br />to his mother Elizabeth, brother C. Louis, sisters Kathleen, Ann, Rita <br />ahd all the members of St. Luke Parish. <br /> <br /> Section 2. That the Clerk of Council <br />authorized and directed to forward <br />St. Luke.Parish, 1212 Bunts Road, <br />of this Resolution be spread upon <br /> <br />she is hereby <br /> Resolution to <br /> add that a copy <br />etlng. <br /> <br />Approved: <br /> <br />MAYOR <br /> <br /> <br />
